The QA Engineer I supports the Digital team’s products and services by contributing to the quality assurance of software development and technology deployments. Working with guidance from senior QA engineers, developers, and DevOps colleagues, the QA Engineer I creates and executes manual and automated tests using the team’s established tools, frameworks, standards, and acceptance criteria. The role identifies and clearly reports software defects, helps maintain reliable regression coverage, and confirms that delivered solutions meet expected functional requirements.

The QA Engineer I is expected to set up and run the team’s Python projects locally so they can develop and execute automated test suites and perform the manual testing needed to understand application behaviour. The role manages assigned tasks and time independently, while seeking input from senior team members when requirements, risks, or technical issues require additional direction.

Responsibilities

  • Manage assigned tasks and day-to-day priorities independently, communicating progress, risks, and blockers in a timely manner.
  • Create, maintain, and execute automated tests using Python, Behave, Selenium, and Playwright based on acceptance criteria, test plans, and guidance from senior team members.
  • Create and execute clear manual test cases and regression tests for web applications, APIs, integrations, and related Digital team services.
  • Set up, configure, and run Python projects locally in order to understand application behaviour, build automated test coverage, reproduce defects, and complete manual testing.
  • Use established test suites and continuous integration pipelines, investigate test failures, and make routine test updates with support from senior engineers when needed.
  • Produce clear, well-structured test cases, test evidence, and bug reports that include reproducible steps, expected results, and actual results.
  • Report defects through the defined process and work collaboratively with developers and other team members to explain findings and verify fixes.
  • Participate in agile ceremonies, requirements discussions, peer reviews, and QA knowledge-sharing activities.
  • Follow established QA procedures, coding conventions, test standards, and source-control practices.
  • Assist with evaluations of QA tools, platforms, or configurations under the direction of senior team members.
  • Help maintain test data, test environments, and supporting QA documentation.
  • Participate in planned after-hours testing or maintenance activities when required.

Qualifications

  • Foundational Python knowledge and the ability to read application and test code, diagnose straightforward failures, and write maintainable automated tests with guidance.
  • Experience with, or demonstrable knowledge of, automated testing tools such as Behave, Selenium, and Playwright.
  • Working knowledge of Git, GitLab, branches, merge requests, and common software development lifecycle practices.
  • Ability to run and interpret automated tests in local environments and GitLab continuous integration pipelines.
  • Basic understanding of JSON, REST APIs, and SOAP services, with the ability to execute and validate API requests and responses.
  • Familiarity with Docker and containerised development or test environments.
  • Basic awareness of AWS services and the purpose of tools such as LocalStack and Moto for local or mocked testing.
  • Ability to create clear test cases and defect reports from requirements, acceptance criteria, or guidance supplied by senior team members.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time and assigned tasks, communicate progress, and request assistance when blocked.
  • Careful attention to detail, curiosity, and a willingness to learn from feedback and contribute within an agile team.

Bonus Qualifications

  • Familiarity with a Python framework such as Django or Flask
  • Exposure to TeamCity or other continuous integration systems.
  • Exposure to load testing tools such as Locust.
  • Experience testing mobile applications or mobile SDKs.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 1+ years of software testing, software development, technical support, or closely related experience. Relevant internships, apprenticeships, academic projects, or personal projects may be considered.
  • Practical experience writing or maintaining automated tests using Python and at least one browser or behaviour-driven testing framework.

Physical Demands:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and related office equipment.
  • Occasional reaching, bending, or lifting of office supplies or equipment (typically under 25 pounds).
  • Regular visual attention and concentration when working with digital screens.
  • Ability to occasionally move throughout the office to attend meetings or retrieve equipment.
  • May occasionally need to set up, connect, or troubleshoot IT hardware which could involve crouching or kneeling.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
